TOUR DETAILS

Embark on an unforgettable 5-day trek connecting two jewels of the Inca legacy: Choquequirao and Machu Picchu. This route, known as the 5-Day Choquequirao and Machu Picchu Trek, takes you through breathtaking landscapes and archaeological sites steeped in history.

Choquequirao, whose Quechua name means “cradle of gold ,” rises above the Quriwayrachina mountain range. Often called the “sacred sister” of Machu Picchu, it was built around the same time by the Inca Pachacuti, and its architectural design shares many similarities with the famous citadel.

Unlike Machu Picchu, which receives up to 5,000 visitors a day, Choquequirao remains almost untouched by mass tourism, attracting only a few adventurers daily. This is due to its remote location: it requires at least two days of hiking from the nearest town to reach it. In fact, its isolation was such that the Spanish conquistadors never managed to invade it.

Currently, the construction of a cable car is planned, which will facilitate access and will likely boost tourism in the area significantly.

Keep in mind that this is a demanding trek at high altitude. The highest point of the route reaches 4,660 meters (15,290 feet) above sea level. Therefore, it is recommended to spend at least three to four days in Cusco before starting the trek to acclimatize properly and minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

Santa Rosa - Marampata

After breakfast, we begin a three-hour uphill hike from Santa Rosa to Marampata (3,110 m). From there, we get our first glimpses of Choquequirao. After lunch, we continue for another two hours to the ruins.

Our guide leads a tour of the complex, of which only 40% has been excavated. Although the local stone is difficult to carve, the architecture is impressive, and the natural surroundings inspire a profound sense of awe. Condors are often seen soaring overhead.

We end the day with dinner at the campsite under a starlit sky.
