The 2-day Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is a popular alternative to the 4-day Classic Inca Trail, ideal for families as it does not require high-altitude hiking or camping.
The Classic Inca Trail is one of the most sought-after destinations in Peru, but due to limited permits, only 500 people are allowed on the trail each day, including porters, guides, and cooks. These permits sell out quickly, so many travelers opt for alternatives like the Salkantay Trail. However, if you’re looking to immerse yourself in Inca history, we recommend the Short Inca Trail.
This tour covers 12 km (7 miles) in 5-6 hours, passing by three key Inca sites: Chachabamba, Wiñay Wayna, and Sungate (Intipunku). With an expert guide, you will explore these sites before visiting Machu Picchu, where you will see the Temple of the Three Windows, the Main Temple, and the Intihuatana.
Remember that the Short Inca Trail is at a considerable altitude, so it is recommended to acclimatize in Cusco for 3-4 days to avoid altitude sickness.
Detailed Itinerary
Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Wiñay Wayna – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes
We will begin our tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas at 8:30 am, with pickup from your hotel. We will visit Pisac, its artisan market, and the archaeological complex, then continue to Urubamba for lunch.
In the afternoon, we will explore the fortress of Ollantaytambo, still inhabited by descendants of the Incas, before taking the train to Aguas Calientes at 4:36 pm. We will arrive around 6:30 pm, where we will spend the night at your selected hotel in Machu Picchu Pueblo.

Early in the morning, we’ll take a 25-minute bus ride uphill to the entrance of Machu Picchu. Our guide will assist you through security, where your original passport and entrance ticket will be checked.
Once inside, you’ll be awestruck by the breathtaking views: the golden rays of the rising sun illuminate the Inca walls as the clouds part, revealing the majesty of the Inca citadel.
We’ll begin an immersive two-hour tour, starting with a brief introduction and visiting the citadel’s most iconic sites. We’ll explore the main plaza, the agricultural terraces, the royal quarters, and the ceremonial sites.
